What is this method of locking hair?
- It’s a unique African basket weaving method that uses a tool to assist in creating the locks.
How is this method applied?
- We begin locking your hair from the tip to the base, or root of the hair, gathering all hairs around it.
- We don't need to use any products (e.g. Gel, wax, or butters) to assist in locking the hair, just water.
- We starting from the top and end at the bottom, other methods start for the root and tightening towards the top.
- It does not pull or cause stress to the shaft, hence uniform locks.
What are the benefits of this method?
- Once we have touched up your already locked hair, one can shampoo the hair within a week and it will not unravel.
- In the long run, it frees your time. No need to spend time after washing hair to re-twist.
Some say they are knots, is this true?
- NO. It's woven unlike knotted.
What length of hair do I need to start my locks?
- At least 2 and1/2 inches of hair is a good start.
Do I need to use products to maintain my hair?
- NO. Our method of locking is sufficient to hold your hair. Adding products will be a personal choice rather than necessity.
Do I need to tie my hair with something before I sleep?
- No, it’s not necessary for this method of locking hair. However, one can tie the hair to smoothen the front and top of the hair.
What shampoos do you recommend?
- One with no de-tangelizing agents. De-tangelizing agents soften the hair which in turn unravels the lock.
Can I condition my hair when I am just starting to lock my hair?
- No. It has a tendency to unravel the work, so it's better to wait until the lock has fully formed.
How often are my touch-up visits?
- Every 6-8 weeks for a touch up or when you have a half-inch of new growth.
Can I wash my hair in between visits?
- Yes.
What do I do in between visits?
- Nothing! Wash and go.
If I START locking my hair with your method, when is the first time I can wash it?
- Depending on the length of the hair and the texture, one can start as early as 1 week after locking to as late as 3 weeks for softer and/or shorter hair.
Can I swim or go to wash my hair after getting it done?
- If you already have locks then of course you could wash right after and it will stay neat and locked.
How long does it take for my hair to lock?
- On average, 3-6 months for kinky textured hair and 6-12 months for softer, finer hair.
Are there stages of locks with this method?
- Yes, just like the traditional way of locking, the hair goes thru baby phase (0-3months) into the teenage phase (3-6months) and finally the matured stage (8-12 months).
How do you install lock extensions?
- By adding human hair to the tip of the locked hair and extending out.
Are lock extensions good for your hair?
- Good and bad is relative, I would like to think that everything has a cause and effect. Extensions are an added weight onto the hair follicles so depending on the type of hair you have, getting extension may not be the thing for you. A consultation with a professional Loctician is necessary to discuss in detail about your own hair.
If I cut my locks can you reattach them back to my hair?
- Yes, with the method that we use, it is very possible. A consultation will help determine whether it is right for you.
Can you undo the locks after just getting it done?
- Yes, you have at least a grace period of 2 months before it becomes more difficult.
Do I have to cut all my relaxed hair before I can wear locks?
- Permed hair does not lock so you may keep the permed hair for length, but when you choose to lock, you must have at least three inches of virgin hair before we can start.
How long do the extensions last?
- They stay in your hair as long as you need them. For most people, an average of 4 years or so.
Is it OK to wash my own hair with my extensions?
- Yes.
When is it OK to color my hair with locks?
- Locks may be colored after they have started forming (at least 6 months).
Can one go back to twisting after starting with this method?
- Yes, one would twist the new growth.
